One of the most acclaimed and internationally recognized Swiss artists today, Roman Signer has created a vast and enigmatic oeuvre of installations and sculptures marked by his use of a diverse array of materials, including water, sand, explosives, and vehicles. This vibrantly illustrated volume features a selection of cards and advertisements for 170 Roman Signer exhibitions since 1973. Each card reflects the artistic sensibilities of its era, and together the cards form a miniature historical narrative of contemporary art.
Critic Gregory Volk has written, "If you wanted to make a list of major contemporary artists who, for whatever reason, are comparatively little known in the U.S., Roman Signer should be right near the top." "Projections," which brings together 33 years of video and Super-8 film stills with a comprehensive catalogue raisonne, helps give the Swiss artist's oeuvre the state side exposure it deserves. The footage documents key moments in the artist's precisely choreographed performances. Signer is known for his poetic hijinks and dramatic experiments with fire, water and air; in 2000, he rode a kayak--towed behind a van--down a road at 20 miles per hour until a hole had worn through the bottom. Seeking out those moments of transition--where materials transform and time seems to accelerate or drag--Signer, through his experimental play with the principles of physics and chemistry, has created an unparalleled body of work that primarily exists as documents of nonreproducible actions.
For Army of One, photographer Elisabeth Real looks beyond these numbers to the individual soldier. From 2006 to 2012, Elisabeth Real spent time with six men who served in Iraq and whose lives have been irreversibly altered by the war. Five of the men have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Through intimate photographs and in-depth interviews, Real tells their stories. "Army of One," the since-retired recruitment slogan, suggests that, by taking your future into your hands, you will be as powerful as an army. Yet, for many soldiers, it has come to mean exactly the opposite.
