On a peat and heather island off the west coast of Scotland, Effie and her mother Nora take refuge in the large mouldering house of their ancestors and tell each other stories.Nora, at first, recounts nothing that Effie really wants to hear, like who her father was - variously Jimmy, Jack, or Ernie.

Effie tells of her life at college in Dundee, the land of cakes and William Wallace, where she lives in a lethargic relationship with Bob, a student who never goes to lectures, seldom gets out of bed, and to whom the Klingons are as real as the French and the Germans (more real than the Luxemburgers).But strange things are happening. Why is Effie being followed?Is someone killing the old people? And where is the mysterious yellow dog?

Kate Atkinson est entrée dans la littérature par la grande porte, en 1996, avec un roman fascinant qui ne ressemblait à rien de connu, Dans les coulisses du musée, qui obtint le Prix Whitbread en Grande-Bretagne et le Prix du Meilleur Livre de l'année en France (« Lire »). Elle a publié depuis des pièces de théâtre et cinq autres romans : Dans les replis du temps (1998), Sous l'aile du bizarre (2000), La Souris bleue (2004) qui a obtenu le Prix Westminster du roman anglais, Les choses s'arrangent, mais ça ne va pas mieux (2006), un recueil de nouvelles : C'est pas la fin du monde (2003) et À quand les bonnes nouvelles (2008). Best-seller en Grande-Bretagne, elle a connu en France des critiques élogieuses et un large public. Son oeuvre fait l'objet d'adaptations télévisuelles. Elle vit actuellement à Édimbourg.
